Baseball Comes Home to Philly This Week — With Fireworks, Schwarber, and One Ace Who Said No

For one week, the whole sport belongs to us. The 2026 MLB All-Star Game is at Citizens Bank Park, and starting tonight, every camera in baseball points across the Delaware at South Philly. If you grew up in South Jersey planning your summer around the Phillies, this is the week you circled in permanent marker.

Here's how the next two nights lay out. The Home Run Derby goes Monday, July 13, at 8 p.m., under the lights at the Bank. The All-Star Game itself follows Tuesday, July 14, also at 8 p.m., with the National League and American League's best trading at-bats on the same infield where Bryce Harper takes his hacks 81 times a year. The Derby streams on Netflix this year — the first time it hasn't lived on ESPN since 1994 — and the game is on FOX.

The Derby: A Hometown Slugfest

The Derby is where the hometown story really cooks. Kyle Schwarber walks into his own ballpark leading all of Major League Baseball with 32 home runs, and he's the betting favorite to win the thing on his home field — a lefty slugger built for that short porch in right, swinging in front of a crowd that already treats his batting-practice sessions like an event. He's not the only red-pinstriped name in the field, either: Harper is in the eight-man bracket too, which means Philadelphia gets two of its own launching baseballs into a delirious hometown crowd. The rest of the field brings its own thunder — Kansas City's Bobby Witt Jr., Tampa Bay's Junior Caminero, and White Sox rookie Munetaka Murakami among them.

There's a rule change worth knowing before you sit down to watch. MLB scrapped the clock. No more timer, no more "outs" — this year it's a straight swing count: 20 cuts in the first round, 15 in the second, 15 in the final. It's cleaner, it's less frantic, and it rewards a hitter who can find a groove instead of one who can rush. For a patient, mistake-punishing bat like Schwarber's, that format is a gift.

The Game: Phillies Flags in Their Own House

The All-Star Game the next night carries its own South Jersey flavor. Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh drew a starting nod in the NL outfield, and Schwarber and Harper are both on the roster as reserves — Schwarber slotting in at DH behind Shohei Ohtani, Harper backing up first base. Three Phillies representing this region in a game played in this region. You couldn't script it better.

Except for the one name that isn't there. And in this town, the absence might be the loudest story of the week.

The Ace Who Said No

Zack Wheeler — arguably the best pitcher the Phillies have — is not pitching in the All-Star Game at his own ballpark, and it's because he told Major League Baseball no. Wheeler didn't make the initial roster, and he wasn't among the replacements announced Tuesday either. Then, on Friday, the league came calling to add him as an injury replacement. He turned it down. "Not gonna be the fifth option," he said, making clear he felt disrespected by being an afterthought.

His message was blunt but fair: he doesn't have a problem with the All-Star Game — he called it a privilege — his problem is with a selection process that left him waiting by the phone.

And the numbers back his frustration all the way up. Wheeler is 9-1 with a 2.28 ERA across 14 starts, a 0.91 WHIP, 98 strikeouts in 87 innings, and a 4.3 WAR — and he built that line after missing all of April recovering from thoracic outlet surgery. He didn't slip through the cracks by accident, either. He got caught by MLB's "Sunday starter" rule, the quirk that pulls pitchers who threw the Sunday before off the eligible list. Wheeler said flatly that if the league had come to him earlier, his answer would have been different.

You can debate whether he should've swallowed the snub and pitched an inning for the fans in his home park. Plenty of Phillies faithful will. But you can't argue he hasn't earned better than fifth-in-line, and there's something very South Jersey about a guy who'd rather keep his dignity than take the consolation prize. He's saving his bullets for October anyway — which, if you ask most people around here, is the game that actually matters.

So set the DVR, gather the kids, and enjoy the rare summer week when baseball's brightest lights are pointed straight at our backyard. Schwarber's going to try to bring the Derby trophy home. Marsh, Harper, and Schwarber are going to fly the Phillies flag in the Midsummer Classic. And Zack Wheeler, the ace who said no, will be watching like the rest of us — resting his right arm for the only stage he seems interested in.
