The last time America threw a party like this, disco was still on the radio. The Bicentennial — July 4th, 1976 — was a once-in-a-generation moment that most people alive today either missed entirely or watched on a black-and-white television as a kid. This Saturday is different. This is the Semiquincentennial. America's 250th birthday. And we're not watching it from somewhere else — the heart of this celebration runs right through our backyard.
From the Camden Waterfront to Wildwood Beach, from the cotton mill bell in Millville to the cannon smoke rising over Fort Mifflin, South Jersey and Philadelphia have stacked this weekend with the kind of programming that doesn't come around twice in a lifetime. Here is every place worth being — and everything you need to know before you go.
The Headliner: Freedom Festival, Camden Waterfront
If you're only going to one event this Fourth of July, this is it. The Freedom Festival at Wiggins Waterfront Park in Camden is the region's premier 250th celebration — and it's free. The Commodores headline a live music program right on the waterfront, with the Philadelphia skyline as the backdrop and a spectacular fireworks display over the Delaware River closing the night.
Gates open at 6pm on July 4th. Get there early — this one is going to draw a crowd worthy of the occasion. Wiggins Waterfront Park sits directly across the river from Penn's Landing, and on a clear July night, there isn't a better view in the entire region.

Fireworks over the waterfront — the signature image of every Fourth of July in the region.
Right in Your Backyard: Collingswood & Haddonfield
You don't have to go far. Two of South Jersey's best hometown celebrations are right here in Camden County, and both are free.
The Collingswood Fourth of July Parade steps off at 9am from Collingswood High School — marching bands, community groups, and floats rolling through a town that knows how to celebrate. Township fireworks follow in the evening. If you want the full small-town Fourth of July experience without fighting waterfront traffic, Collingswood delivers every year.
In Haddonfield, the parade down Kings Highway is one of South Jersey's longest-running Independence Day traditions. Starts at 10am, street fair follows on the main strip. Bring the kids, grab a spot on the curb early, and enjoy a morning that feels exactly like Independence Day is supposed to feel.
History First: Bell Ringings, Fort Mifflin & Independence Mall
The 250th isn't just about fireworks. It's about what this date actually means — and if you want to feel that, the living history events are where it happens.
On the morning of July 4th at 11:30am, the David C. Wood Mansion in Millville rings its historic cotton mill bell as part of the nationwide Ringing of the Freedom Bells — a coordinated moment happening across the entire country at the same time. It's the kind of thing that gives you chills if you let it. Over in Mount Holly, the Olde Historic Courthouse hosts its own reading and bell ringing as well.
Starting July 3rd, Fort Mifflin on the Delaware opens its Fourth at the Fort — Revolutionary War soldier demonstrations, cannon and musket fire, and historical tours of one of the oldest forts in America. Gates open at 10am Friday and Saturday. If you have kids who have never seen a cannon fired, this is the weekend.
Independence Hall at night — 20 minutes from South Jersey, the literal birthplace of the nation.
Across the bridge at Independence Mall in Philadelphia — the literal birthplace of the United States — the Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade rolls, followed by public readings of the Declaration of Independence, concerts, and the city's signature fireworks. July 4th on Independence Mall in the 250th year. That's not just a local event. That's history.
Down the Shore: Wildwood, Atlantic City & Ocean City
For South Jerseyans, the Shore is always part of the equation on the Fourth. This year, the shore towns stepped up.
Wildwood is running a two-hour free outdoor concert by the Jump City Jazz Orchestra at Fox Park Amphitheater — a Songbook of America celebration fitting for a 250th. It starts at 8pm and runs straight into Wildwood's official fireworks display and, new this year, a drone show. Fireworks and drones over Wildwood Beach on the 250th. That's a visual nobody's going to forget.
Atlantic City goes a completely different direction — James Kennedy and Vinny Guadagnino headline a massive Independence Day Beach Party at the Bungalow Beach Bar starting at noon. Tickets are required for this one; check Eventbrite for availability before you go.
The Shore transforms every Fourth of July — street festivals, live music, boardwalk fireworks, and now a drone show in Wildwood.
If you want something a little more low-key but still spectacular, Ocean City kicked off the 250th weekend early with its Pops concert at Carey Stadium on July 2nd — and the OCNJ Boardwalk is in full summer swing through Labor Day, with live music every weekend evening. Sometimes the best Fourth of July is the one where you're sitting on the boards with a funnel cake watching the sun go down.
Down in Cape May, Historic Cold Spring Village hosts its Semiquincentennial 4th of July Celebration on July 5th — a great option if you're staying shore-side through the weekend and want to keep the celebration going one more day.

Wildwood traffic on the Fourth is Wildwood traffic; the Shore Parkway fills up early. And check each event's official page before heading out — times and lineups are always subject to change on holiday weekends.
However you celebrate it, and wherever you end up on Saturday — take a minute to actually feel it. 250 years. The Declaration of Independence was signed 15 minutes from here. The Liberty Bell is 20 minutes away. The people who lit the fuse on this whole experiment in self-governance did it right down the road.
That's worth more than just a night of fireworks. Happy 250th, South Jersey. Make it count.
