If your taste runs a little more art-rock and a little less Aqua Net, the same venue flips the mood entirely on Wednesday, July 29, when Muse brings The Wow! Wildwood Crest is throwing its Christmas in July Festival, complete with a boat parade along Sunset Lake — roughly forty boats, decked out and lit up, gliding by around 8:45 p.m. There’s live music, face painting, food, and, yes, free photos with Santa in the middle of a heat wave. It sounds like a fever dream. It’s actually one of the more charming things the shore does all summer, precisely because it refuses to make sense. Bring the kids. Bring your inner child. Bring sunscreen and a candy cane.

And for the budget-conscious and the spontaneous, Wildwood hosts a free beach concert on Monday, July 27, featuring local bands. No ticket, no fuss — the standard shore-show wisdom applies: bring your own beach chair and get there early to stake out something near the stage. There’s a particular magic to live music with sand under your feet and the ocean doing backup vocals, and the fact that it costs nothing only makes it better.
