If you woke up this morning feeling like you’d gotten away with something, you did. Daylight saving time ended overnight, the clocks fell back an hour, and all across South Jersey people are walking around with that rare and specific smugness of a Sunday that handed them sixty free minutes. Spend them well. By February you’ll want them back.
That returned hour is the gentle part of the week. Here’s the rest of it.
Tuesday: go vote
The big one lands Tuesday. November 3 is Election Day, and polling places from Haddonfield to Glassboro to the far reaches of Salem County will be open for the people who didn’t vote early or by mail. I’ll leave the races to our politics desk and just say the neighborly thing, which is this: go. The lines at a Tuesday municipal polling place are rarely long, the poll workers are almost always someone’s retired aunt who’s done this for twenty years, and there is no civic act more stubbornly local than walking into a church basement or a fire hall and marking a ballot about the place you actually live. Bring the kids if you can. They remember it.
Whatever the forecast brings, the week’s errands still need running. We’ve slid fully into November now, and the mornings have that first honest bite to them — the kind that sends you back inside for the heavier coat you swore you wouldn’t need until Thanksgiving. The last of the leaf season is hanging on in the older towns, where the big maples on the side streets of Collingswood and Moorestown and Haddonfield are doing their annual show for anyone willing to look up from their phone on the walk to the car.
The calendar tips toward the holidays
And then the calendar tips, almost imperceptibly, toward the holidays. You can feel the region bracing for it. Around Thanksgiving, Camden County’s WinterFest ice rink usually returns to Cooper River Park, the holiday lights go up in Historic Smithville down in Atlantic County, and every Main Street from Pitman to Mount Holly will start stringing the lights it keeps in the same municipal garage every year. We’re not there yet. But the first week of November is when South Jersey quietly admits it’s coming.
For now, though, the week is small and good: an hour you didn’t expect, a vote worth casting, a coat worth finding. The light will leave earlier every evening from here on out — that’s the trade we made this morning. Which only means the porch lights go on sooner, and the windows down your block start glowing a little earlier against the dark.
