The state rankings came out this week and, as usual, the top of the list looked a lot like North Jersey. Don Bosco Prep sat undefeated at 5-0, the consensus class of New Jersey after knocking off St. Joseph Regional 23-10 in a rematch of last year’s Non-Public A final. Fine. Let the Bergen County powers have the preseason glossy covers and the statewide top 25. Down here, October is when the season stops being about rankings and starts being about seeding — and that’s a different, meaner kind of math.
The math that matters
If you’ve ever stood on a South Jersey sideline on a Friday night in early October, you know the shift. September is where you find out who you are. October is where it counts. Every snap from here on nudges a power-ranking point up or down, and those points decide home field in the playoffs — whether a team spends a cold November night on its own grass or on a two-hour bus ride to somebody else’s.

That’s the part the casual fan misses. The kid grinding through two-a-days back in August wasn’t doing it for a highlight. He was doing it for this stretch, when a one-score win in Week 6 is the difference between a first-round bye-week feeling and a road trip to a place nobody wants to play. Coaches around here will tell you the same thing every year: you don’t get to pick your path in October, you earn it.
What the rankings miss
And the beauty of South Jersey football is that the path runs through places that don’t make the statewide top 25 but mean everything to the towns that pack the bleachers. These are programs where the offensive coordinator also teaches third-period history, where the booster club runs the snack stand on a volunteer rotation that’s been going for two decades, where the senior captain is the same kid who was a water boy for his older brother’s team eight years ago. The ranking services don’t have a column for any of that.
I covered high school ball before I ever covered a Phillies game, and I’ll be honest — some of the best football I’ve ever watched had maybe 400 people in the stands and no TV cameras anywhere. A tie game in the fourth, a crowd that grew up together, a kid you’ve watched since freshman year finally getting his moment. You don’t need a top-25 ranking to feel that. You just need a Friday in October and a seat on the fifty.
So let the big schools up north chase the undefeated season and the state-title storyline. Down here, the teams that matter are the ones quietly stacking wins nobody outside the county is watching, climbing the power points one honest game at a time, playing for the right to host a playoff night their town will remember long after the final whistle.
October’s here. The season just got honest. Go find a Friday night and see for yourself.
