Philadelphia is done building. The 76ers enter the 2026-27 NBA season with one of the most talent-rich rosters in league history — Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, LeBron James, and first-round rookie VJ Edgecombe — and a city that has waited long enough.
If you followed the summer, you know the moves. General manager Mike Gansey, who replaced Daryl Morey in May, wasted no time remaking the roster around Embiid's prime. Brown came first — acquired to add a proven wing scorer and defender to complement Maxey in the backcourt. Then LeBron James, in what may be the most surprising transaction in modern NBA history, chose Philadelphia. Not Los Angeles. Not Miami. Philadelphia.
The Roster They Built
Head coach Nick Nurse, now entering his third year in South Philly, has the personnel to run virtually any system he wants. Embiid, the reigning former MVP, gives the team an anchor at center that few rosters in the league can match. Maxey — an All-Star the last two seasons — provides elite guard play and relentless pressure in the pick-and-roll. Brown brings two-way competence and championship experience from his years in Boston. And LeBron James, at whatever age he has reached, remains a basketball force of nature.
Add Edgecombe — a high-athletic wing out of the 2026 Draft who has drawn comparisons to a young Kawhi Leonard in terms of his defensive instincts — and the Sixers have depth they have not had in years.
"This city has been patient. This team owes them something real." — Nick Nurse, Sixers Media Day, September 2026
The Question Is Health
It is always the question with Philadelphia, isn't it? Embiid's body has never been the issue when he is upright and healthy. LeBron, despite everything, has rarely missed significant time. But age is not nothing, and this roster requires all of its stars on the floor at the same time if it is going to challenge the league's elite.
Preseason tips off in early October. The Wells Fargo Center, long a building defined by hope deferred, will be loud this fall. South Jersey fans have been waiting for a 76ers team that has no reason to make excuses. This is it.
