Phil Cortez didn't learn to paint. He grew up in it — and there's a real difference between those two things. His family ran a painting company called "His and Hers." His brother, his sister, his brother-in-law — all in construction, all in painting in some form or another. Dave, his brother-in-law, runs his own specialized operation doing tub resurfacing, tile refinishing, and more. It's not just what Phil's family did. It's what they are.

By the time Phil went out on his own, he wasn't starting from scratch. He was starting from three generations of craft, a family business, and a standard that most painters never even hear about — let alone meet.

Not Just a Painter. A Specialized Craftsman.

Phil's Painting does the full scope — and that's not a marketing line. One week Phil is doing custom cabinet refinishing in a multi-million dollar home in Cherry Hill. The next week he's painting an apartment in Pennsauken or doing a living room for a neighbor. Decks, wood staining, interior walls and ceilings, exterior siding and trim, custom refinishing work — Phil has done all of it, repeatedly, at a high level.

Most contractors pick a lane. Phil didn't need to. He was raised in a world where the work taught you what it needed, and you learned it. When you grow up that way, you don't specialize because you're afraid of the other stuff — you specialize because you care about getting each piece right.

That's the word that keeps coming up when people talk about Phil: care. He cares about the edges. He cares about the prep. He cares about whether the color looks right on the fourth day, not just the first. And when something isn't up to standard, he knows it before the homeowner does.

Why He Stays Small on Purpose

The Gazette asked Phil about it directly — why he hasn't scaled up, brought on eight crews, expanded aggressively. His answer was the most honest thing we've heard from a contractor in a long time.

"I could have 8 trucks and crews right now, but I care about what I do. I just can't overcharge people — and everything I do is a reflection of my name and my company. So I want to make sure it all gets done right. Unfortunately it means a lot of times I gotta be there. Fortunately, I love what I do. I love walking into a home that is not looking too nice, paint chipping and falling off — and when I'm done it looks like a Benjamin Moore magazine. Maybe I'm crazy, but I just love making people's homes look good. Like an HGTV show when I'm done." — Phil Cortez, Phil's Painting

That's not false modesty. That's a man who has looked at what growth does to quality in this industry and made a deliberate choice. His name goes on every job. His reputation is tied to every wall. He's not going to compromise that for a bigger crew list.

From Million-Dollar Homes to Your Living Room

One of the things that makes Phil's Painting unusual is the range. He's done high-end custom work in some of the nicest homes in South Jersey — the kind of job where clients have very specific expectations and even more specific taste. He's also done apartments, everyday homes, and the neighbor's living room. He treats every job the same way: like it's a reflection of his name.

Cabinet refinishing, custom wood staining, deck work, full exterior paint projects, full interior refreshes — if it involves paint or finish in South Jersey, Phil has probably done it at a very high level and can do it again for you. The difference between Phil and a guy who shows up with a sprayer and a crew of five is the difference between someone who cares what it looks like when the light changes and someone who just needs it to look good in the photo.

South Jersey has a lot of painters. It has very few who live the craft the way Phil Cortez does. When you find one like that, you hold onto them.
