OCEAN CITY — While most of the shore spends July chasing the loud stuff — the drone shows over Atlantic City, the fireworks, the headliners at the casinos — there is a smaller thing happening a few blocks north that I’d argue is the best deal on the whole Jersey coast. It costs nothing, it lasts about an hour, and it asks only that you get out of bed.

Twice a week, for free

Twice a week this summer, Ocean City offers guided beach walks led by volunteers the town calls beachguides — on Tuesdays at 9 a.m. and again on Wednesdays at 6:30 in the evening, for the folks who’d rather trade the sunrise for the gold of early dusk. There’s no gimmick to it. A volunteer who knows this beach the way you know your own street simply walks it with you and tells you what you’re looking at: the shells underfoot, the birds working the tideline, the ocean itself, the tough little plants that hold the dunes together.

Why something so modest sticks

I went looking for what makes something like this stick, because on paper it’s modest. An hour. A stretch of sand you’ve probably walked a hundred times. But that’s exactly the point, and it’s the thing most of us miss. They show up in the early light because they love this coast and they’d like you to love it a little more knowledgeably than you did yesterday. In a summer economy built on selling people expensive ways to have fun, there’s something almost radical about a person offering to hand you the shore for free, just because they think you should know it better.

Who the walks are for

I keep thinking about who these walks are really for. The kid who asks a thousand questions and finally has someone answering them. The grandparent who wants to give a grandchild something that isn’t a screen. The couple who has been coming down for forty years and discovers, on a Tuesday morning, that there was a whole living world in the sand they’d been stepping over the whole time.

The shore will keep offering its fireworks and its headliners, and there’s nothing wrong with any of it. But if you want the version of Ocean City that stays with you after Labor Day, set an alarm. Nine a.m., on the sand, no ticket required.
