The Eagles Report Without A.J. Brown. Now We Find Out Who Hurts Really Is.

The trucks are unloaded, the lockers are stocked, and as of this morning the entire Philadelphia Eagles roster has reported to the Jefferson Health Training Complex for the start of the 2026 season. Rookies and veterans walked through the door together on July 28, with the first full practice set for tomorrow. And for the first time in three years, one of the most familiar faces in that building isn’t walking in with them.

A.J. Brown is a New England Patriot now. Say it out loud a few times and it still doesn’t sit right. The man who came here and turned into one of the most feared receivers in football, gone in a trade that split this fan base down the middle. I grew up in Camden watching this team hand games away for lack of a real No. 1 target. We finally had one. Now the front office has bet that they can win without him. This is the summer we find out if that bet was smart or reckless.

It all comes back to Hurts — and who he’s throwing to

Because make no mistake — everything about this camp comes back to Jalen Hurts, and everything about Hurts this year comes back to the men he’s throwing to. DeVonta Smith is the clear No. 1 now, no longer the running mate. That’s a role Smith has quietly earned and deserves, but it also means the defense’s best cornerback follows him everywhere, and someone else has to make them pay. That someone is a room full of question marks: Hollywood Brown, brought in to stretch the field; Makai Lemon, the rookie everyone in the building keeps mentioning; Dontayvion Wicks and Elijah Moore trying to prove last year wasn’t the whole story.

A new language on offense

Then there’s the scheme itself. New offensive coordinator Sean Mannion has replaced Kevin Patullo, and the word out of the complex is that Mannion wants Hurts under center more, wants motion, wants throws over the middle — the parts of the field this offense has mostly ignored with Hurts running the show. That’s a real change in identity. Add in longtime offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland stepping down, and you’ve got a team asking its franchise quarterback to learn a new language while breaking in new voices around him.

The line has its own worries. Lane Johnson, Cam Jurgens and Landon Dickerson are all working back from injury-related concerns, and this offense doesn’t function if that group isn’t whole. Everybody wants to talk about the skill players. The games get won up front, the way they always have around here.

The schedule wrote the storyline

I’ll say this for the doubters: the schedule gives them a target. The Eagles have a joint practice with the Patriots on August 19, which means Hurts and this remade offense get to line up across from the guy they traded away before the games even count. You couldn’t script it better. But joint practices are three weeks off. Right now it’s report day, and the only thing that matters is who shows up ready to work.

South Jersey lives and dies with this team. We’ve earned the right to be nervous, and we’ve earned the right to be excited, because both feelings are true at once. The Birds are back at it. Tomorrow they hit the field. We’ll be watching every rep.
