Some of the best nights out in South Jersey don’t cost a thing. Case in point: four times a year — in April, June, August and October — Collingswood’s Haddon Avenue shrugs off its weekday self and turns into something closer to a street-long gallery — art in the windows, music on the corners, shops and studios open, and a sidewalk full of people who decided to come out and see it.

That’s the spirit of Second Saturday, the kind of recurring arts-and-culture night that has helped make Collingswood one of the region’s most walkable, lively downtowns. The formula is simple and it works: give local artists and makers a stage, keep the doors open, add music and food, and let the avenue do the rest.

Why It Works

Downtowns live or die on reasons to show up, and a free, recurring arts night is one of the best reasons there is. It supports local businesses, gives artists real foot traffic, and gives families and couples an easy plan that doesn’t require a reservation or a big spend. It’s a model more South Jersey main streets could borrow — and a great night even if you’re just there to wander.
