If you’ve ever driven past a colonial tavern or an old farmstead and wondered what’s inside, October is your month. Camden County History Month runs Oct. 1 through Oct. 31, and it throws open the doors of the county’s past — more than 25 historic sites and history organizations offering over 50 tours, exhibits, talks, reenactments and family programs, most of them free.

The lineup leans into the region’s deep Revolutionary roots. Programming includes the new American Revolution Museum of Southern New Jersey, housed in the 1734 Benjamin Cooper Tavern, with a Sunday, Oct. 11 program; the Gabreil Daveis Tavern Museum on Oct. 11 and 25; and an Oct. 25 sail aboard the schooner North Wind from Gloucester City ($38 a ticket).

Colonial taverns open during the month include the Benjamin Cooper Tavern and the Gabreil Daveis Tavern, with tours also planned at historic buildings like the 1825 Collings-Knight House in Collingswood and the 1816 Barclay Farmstead Museum in Cherry Hill. Programs stretch well beyond the Revolution, too — covering African American history, the Civil War, railroads, the Holocaust, and 20th-century county life.

How to Make the Most of It

With dozens of programs spread across the county and most of them free, the move is to pick two or three close to home and build a weekend around them. It’s the rare local calendar that’s genuinely for every age — a reenactment for the kids, a tavern tour for the grown-ups, and a boat ride if the weather holds.
