BLACKWOOD — On Sunday, downtown Blackwood will do the thing it does best one weekend a year: it will disappear under a tide of people and reappear as the center of South Jersey.
The Blackwood Pumpkin Festival returns this Sunday, October 4, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., spreading down the Black Horse Pike and the side streets of Gloucester Township’s old village heart. The organizers at the Mainstage Center for the Arts are expecting more than 8,000 people and have lined up over 200 vendors — a mix that, if you have ever been, is the real character of the day. It is not only crafters and food trucks. It is the local Scout troop, the fire company, the church auxiliary, the woman who makes soap in her kitchen, the high school booster club, all set up shoulder to shoulder along the same stretch of pavement.
What’s there
For the kids, there is pumpkin painting, scarecrow building, inflatables and games, plus live entertainment running all afternoon on the main stage. For everyone else, there is the particular pleasure of running into three people you know before you have made it past the second block. Admission is free. Parking is free too, over at Highland Regional High School, with a shuttle to carry you in — a small kindness that turns a logistical headache into a non-event.
Who runs it
What makes this one worth writing about is not its size, though it has grown into one of the biggest single-day gatherings in Camden County. It is who runs it. The Mainstage Center for the Arts is a nonprofit that spends the rest of the year teaching kids to act and sing and build sets, and the festival helps keep the lights on. So the pumpkin you buy and the funnel cake you regret are quietly underwriting a drama program somewhere down the line. That is the kind of circle a healthy town draws without anyone having to explain it.

If it rains
A word to the wise, because the forecast is always the wild card this time of year: organizers have set a rain date of Sunday, October 11, if the weather turns. After the September we just had, nobody around here needs reminding how fast a nice morning can go sideways.
But if the sky cooperates, do yourself a favor. Park at the high school, take the shuttle, and let Blackwood show you what a Sunday is supposed to feel like.
